Pilates is a holistic fitness system that aims to focus on improving your strength, flexibility, alignment and body control. At our Pilates classes in Christchurch Dorset we take the time to develop your technique to help you become more aware of your breathing and the way your body moves. Our small group Pilates classes allow you to focus on your body with the aim of creating flow to the exercises.
Pilates is highly versatile – whether you’re recovering from injury, aiming to improve your own fitness, or just wanting time to de stress in good company.
How the classes work
Our Pilates classes in Christchurch Dorset suit all ages and levels of experience. If you’re new to Pilates, we recommend starting with a one-to-one session or a Starter Workshop with one or two other people. This will allow the instructor to take you through the basics, check you’re doing the exercises correctly and recommend the best class for you going forward. Each class runs for 60 minutes. We ask that you arrive five minutes before the session so you’re ready to get started (please bear in mind that if you’re over 15 minutes late, we may not be able to accommodate you).
Pilates Matwork is exactly that – a mat-based exercise session with no impact on the body. The aim of the exercises is to focus awareness on your posture, and the alignment of your spine and pelvis. We’ll work with you to maintain that good postural alignment while you exercise – until it becomes second nature!

What is Pilates?
Pilates was created by a German physical trainer called Joseph Pilates (1883-1967). During World War I, Pilates found himself interned in Lancaster Castle and, later, in a hospital on the Isle of Man. It was while working with injured patients there that he began to develop ideas for a new fitness system. His techniques centred on controlled breathing, better balance and alignment, and building up the core (the hips, back and abdomen). In the 1920s, he took the system to New York and opened a gym there. It was a huge hit, particularly with professional dancers. Nearly a century on, Pilates is now one of the most popular forms of exercise in the world.
Based in Christchurch Dorset, we specialise in Body Control Pilates® (BCP)*, which focuses on matwork Pilates classes for both group exercise and one to ones. BCP is widely seen as a benchmark for safe and effective Pilates teaching of the highest quality. Founded over 20 years ago, it is Europe’s largest professional Pilates organisation. Look for the Body Control kitemark as a symbol of teaching excellence.
If you’re attending one of our Pilates classes in Christchurch Dorset for the first time, please arrive 15 minutes beforehand so you can complete the necessary paperwork and health checks. We ask all our clients to complete these either on paper or online here. The information you provide will be treated confidentially. See our Terms and Conditions for more details.
Clothing that’s comfortable and allows you to move freely works best for Pilates – body-hugging Lycra is not essential! Many people do the exercises barefoot, but you can wear Pilates slipper socks or toe socks if you prefer; socks with a little grip on the bottoms are ideal. You might also like to bring a water bottle and a towel with you to the sessions.
We supply all the mats and equipment that you might need in the classes.
If you’re unable to attend a pre-booked class, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible that you won’t be there and if there is space available in an alternative mat class you can swap on to it, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01202 473 800
A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required to swap a class; any classes not swapped or used will be lost.
Classes are run regularly every week. To view our timetable, click here.
